We invited talented illustrators from around the world with fashion design background to design Abaya’s from their own perspectives and culture, and to give the final design a more modern application.
Romeo from Indonesia, Jakarta
Romeo’s concept is inspired by back to basics style of abaya, exaggerated silhouette and black color, with elegant silver glitter fabrics detailing and patterns.
The patterns are inspired by Batik Indonesia pattern (artistic partner design used in wax-resist dyeing technique originating from Java), that represent branches plant and leaf, early connection with beautiful flows.
Graduate in Fine Arts, Textile & Fashion design, Romeo brings a unique perspective to Abaya design from a modern approach yet influenced by a classical design.
Spyroula – South Africa
Spyroula is of South African Cypriot background, living in London. She is a graduate fashion designer who interned at various fashion labels such as Suwha Hong, Nicholas Oakwell, a couture house and Maria Francesca Pepe, an avant-garde fashion jeweller. She also has her own label. Her inspiration for the abayas came from her greek background, using flowing materials, long and loose fitting and included lots of drapery. Very beautify and imposing design with a splash of colour in the fabric and accessories, modernising the necklines a tighter fit around the waist, yet still keeping them conservative, traditional and elegant.
Zofia – Poland
Zofia has come up with 2 elegant designs, one for more of an everyday abaya, and the second for more a formal evening abaya with a strong statement on fabric flows. Her designs are delicate in structure, ethereal fairytailish, using multilayered fabrics and utilising chiffon (with a base of georgette) in colour of raspberry and mint.
Zofia is a 24 year old Polish graduate of Art & Design, who has recently been living in Greece, and the Greek influence in here designs is definitely evident. She has a vast experience in both Fashion illustration as well hands on dress making and handbag creations.
