CV Tips to consider

A good CV test a story about you, your achievements and how you have positioned yourself on par or above others. Its the first impression someone gets about you and you just hope its the right impression.

There is no need to hope when you have done your homework and placed the right information with a sufficiently interesting profile that the reader takes a second look and potentially invite you for an interview.

  1. Make sure your CV includes your full name and contact details.
  2. Make job titles clear and prominent, with start and end dates and name of the employer.
  3. A summary paragraph is good practice and its absolutely essential to have a strong, hard-hitting message to the reader.
  4. Carefully compile a succinct list of industry-specific individual excellences and include them in the summary and each job experience you have.
  5. An effective summary focuses on what makes you stand out; your dynamic record of achievement, your unique skills set, the value you bring to the table – all things that nobody else can claim.
  6. The summary paragraph is the most-read section of the entire CV and is your ticket to the interview e.g. It serves as a keyword-rich area that enables your CV to be quickly found on the internet.
  7. Accessible anytime, anywhere and from any device including Smartphones, Tablet and PCs.

 

Secure your CV

A CV should include all that is necessary to create interest in you, your work and educational experience. However many still include personal information which is no longer required or isnt relavant. This unnecessary extra information makes your CV longer when you need to keep it consice but more importantly and with nature of online systems, many more people have access to your data and personal information needs to be protected until its necessary to share this information with the recruiter or employer.

For instance, items that should not be on your CV anymore or at least in some cases the extent of the detail needs to be economical are: Date of birth, this is not required due to age discrimination laws, but if you want to include it, just provide the year. There is no need to state on your CV your place of birth, just provide your nationality. In most cases your marital status and the number of childres you have are not necessary. There is no need to put the full address, county/country is all that is required.

No need to put the details of references as you might be putting them at risk. Definitely do not include information such as passport details, national insurance or social security numbers. Some contractors state their bank or bank account details, this should never be included.

Avoid puting links to your social networking web page unless you really have to, as part of your promotion of your skills. Limit it to professional social networks such as LinkedIn.
