Global Citizen’s ‘One World: Together at Home’ Concert
One World: Together at Home, check the link out, is the first global gathering of artists to broadcast in a rolling marathon of music and positive messages online in support and thanks to the front-line workers around the world who have been fighting the Corona virus and saving lives. Undoubtedly the largest gathering – albeit virtually – of major recording artists since Live Aid.
Hosted by Lady Gaga under the banner of Global Citizen movement, was no doubt a great success which was watched by over 50 million views online and over 14.6 million viewers on US TV networks, untold messages and retweets across all social media channels and managed to raise $127 million in donations and pledges.
All this without having to go to a concert and staying at home and maintaining social distancing. Is this the way of the future of concerts or just whilst we have the threat of virus exposure?
Lady Gaga’s reach into the music industry world is outstanding, that she managed to gather some of the biggest names in music and talent to feature in “at-home” performances. This was also arranged in record time, that is serious mobilisation of people and technology!
Performances included The Rolling Stones, Sir Paul McCartney, Sir Elton John, Taylor Swift, Sam Smith, John Legend and Annie Lennox who all sang their biggest hits, while stars like David and Victoria Beckham, Idris Elba, Oprah Winfrey, first ladies Laura Bush, Michelle Obama and others provided messages of support.
Even Saturday Night hosts Stephen Colbert, Jimmy Kimmel and Jimmy Fallon were out supporting the event with their comic snippets, who joked that, of the $50 million pledged by corporate sponsors before the show aired, “half of that was from holding Jeff Bezos upside down and shaking him for loose change”?
Well done to all those that were involved in bring this event together, its amazing what we humans can do in terms of good for our world when we are gathered by one vision.
